When We're Broken

What does Jesus think about us when we are struggling?

When it seems like our faith is faltering, when our obedience needs a jump start, when we’ve been wounded by our own choices, how will Jesus treat us?

Will He abandon us because of our failures?

That’s a fear for many Christians because, although we’ve been set free from sin, the process of being made holy can be a long, up and down battle.

Our Christian walk can sometimes look more like the awkward steps of a toddler than the confident steps of a soldier of the Lord.

So for us these words about Christ can be an encouragement...

Matthew 12:20
a bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not quench,
until he brings justice to victory

When you are bruised by your sin or when the wick of your faith flickers, you don’t have to fear that Jesus is going to snuff you out, that He’s going to see you as a sheep too broken for His perfect flock.

Christ never abandons His sheep. He never forsakes a friend.

In fact, He stays with them until victory comes. He will bring justice to victory in your heart.

He is our shepherd not because we’re perfect but because we need to be guided out of the shadow of death. We need to be led to still waters. We need someone to make us lie down in green pastures.

This doesn’t mean we take our sin lightly, it’s exactly the opposite. Christ’s continued love is made amazing because our sin is such a big deal.

Let Christ’s constant faithfulness encourage you. When you’re fighting against sin, you are not alone.

And let his constancy inspire you, get up. Run from sin and seek to love Christ the way that He lives you.

And do it all with faith, Christ will lead you to victory. He will watch over you until justice reigns in you.

A World Full of Roses

Did you know that smelling the roses can be good for you?

We can learn a lot from the world around us.

Sun and sky, plants and animals, from the biggest star to the smallest flower all teach us about the glory of God. In them, we can see His power and majesty.

But they teach us something else too.

They teach us about God’s love for us.

Matthew 6:26
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

Matthew 6:30
But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

We go through this world with little thought about what it’s meant to teach us. We don’t see a tree as some instructor, the sun as a guide to knowing God.

But God fills this world with reminders about who He is. The theology we see in the pages of Scripture is brought to life before our eyes, living and breathing life. We walk on a carpet of God’s promises.

The next time you see a bird, remember this is no accidental flying animal. It’s a divine proclamation. Every bird is a reminder both of the greatness of God and of the greatness of His love for you. As the bird flies, know that God is watching over it. That He knows every flap of its wing and every tiny breath that fills its lungs as it soars. And He feeds it and cares for it. And if it falls, He is there. And then know that God feels the same, feels even more, for you.

We live in a world filled with flowers and grass. Tiny paint pots of God’s creative beauty. God clothes these most fragile of things, which shine for but a moment each season. But we’re not just supposed to see a flower or a blade of grass, we’re supposed to see us. “If God takes care of them in such a marvelous way, how much more will He take care of me?”

These are all reminders that God has placed in the world for us to see, but we miss them. We see the birds, we see the flowers, but we miss what they are meant to teach us.

So today, look for birds. Keep an eye out for flowers. And know that every bird you see and every bloom in your path is not a mistake but a message, not an accident but an announcement, a promise, an assurance from God.

God takes care of that bird and He takes care of you.

God provides for that flower and He will provide me.

And He put them both there for you to see and to know.

If you do that, if you’ll look for these message bearers, you’ll notice a world teeming with life, full of birds, overgrown with flowers, carpeted with grass, and each one a giant shout from your God. It will be overwhelming. And you’ll be shocked you never noticed before.

Our world is full of God’s promises to us.

Today, let’s take a look around and let’s listen to what God says about His love for us in every bird and in every bloom.

Fight sin like Jesus...

How do we fight temptation?

Satan is a liar. He has been since the beginning and he’s good at it.

Sin is believing a lie, believing that God’s commandments are chains, believing that I’ll be happier if I do this, that my life will be more satisfied, that I need this, deserve this, or that I don’t deserve what God has promised.

How do we fight that? How do we stand against the lies?

Ephesians 6:13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm

Part of that armor is the sword of God’s word...

Ephesians 6:17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God

We fight temptation with God’s word.

And that’s how Christ fought it...

Matthew 4:3-4 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

And again...

Matthew 4:7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

And again...

Matthew 4:10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’”

Stroke after stroke, Jesus fought the greatest temptation this world has ever seen and he fought it with the truth of Scripture.

When temptation comes, fight. Grab God’s word, read it, recite it, write it down, because every word of God is a sword thrust into heart of Satan’s lies.

And when sin comes back with new lies or old classics it’s used before, swing. Swing again and again and again. Wield God’s word to break its illusions, to see through its deceptions.

Follow the example of Christ and fight sin’s lies with the Truth.

Dress like a Christian

Did you know that Christians are supposed to dress a certain way?

That’s right. God tells Christians what they should wear.

There is certain uniform for the Christian life.

God gives us a whole list of things that the Christian should wear every day.

But God’s not about talking our clothes. He’s talking about how to dress our hearts...

Colossians 3:12-17
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

What is it that the Christian should wear? What must we clothe ourself with every day?

Here’s the uniform of the Christian...
* Compassionate hearts.
* Kindness.
* Humility.
* Meekness.
* Patience.
* Forgiveness.
* Love.
* Peace of Christ.
* Thankfulness.
* The word of Christ.
* Do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.

We wonder what we should wear, what clothes to put on for that particular day.

But God worries about something more important than our clothes. He’s worried about how we dress our hearts.

These are the things that, if God has saved us, we need to put on every day, the uniform of a Christian.

Let me encourage you, Christian, update your wardrobe. Look and see what you’ve been wearing. What has your heart been clothed with?

Tip: Make a list of these things and put them on your closet door to remind yourself of the clothes you need to be wearing every day.

Today, let’s dress start dressing like Christians.
